African and South American Cichlid Tank
Cichlids are fascinating fish. With good care they can be exciting, fun to watch pets. Change the water as often as 3 times per week (60% at a time) cause they are river fish and need a constantly fresh supply of water. (And don’t forget aquarium salt!)

its like you said someone whos a novice they know a little bit and just go with it…i agree with you on the enivronment replication thats what i try to do i finally got a fully brakish tank up and running for my bichirs and im trying to figure out how i can do a murky river basin type tank
Not to start anything with anyone, but most aquarium fish now adays are bred in captivity and breeding farms, they are not easily stressed by water chemistry(still try to) and they are quickly able to adjust to standard water conditions in the area, this is a very controversial topic in fish forums and stuff, but i think u can mix them, only those who know exactly what they are doing though.
Most african cichlids are bred in your own country’s and aren’t imported from Africa ,so its unlikely they give a crap about lower ph.After 50 years of being bred in the country’s own water they get use to it.You don’t honestly believe your town water is identical to Lake Malawi do you?Anyway i will have you know there is a happy medium in ph where you can keep both.Difference of instinct and charecter is the main problem.I have bred thousands of africans and americans in the same ph!
uuh so naturally tank… :S Ridiculous
Sorry! I speak 4 languages, but not THAT ONE!! Learn English ‘tard!
also one of the reasons for not mixing is the prob
Nice job mixing Cichlid types. It’s like mixing Nazi bikers and Jewish bikers. lol
Whered you get the wood? DOoyou know what kind it is, did you have any trouble with it rotting
Bichirs arent brackish!
check your self and get back to me
Ive checked you fucking asshole thats why I asked
do they fight??? if so how wins?
limeyoke, i like your aquarium style, about your design, great idea to mix different color of stone .
I have an aquarium mix of american and african cichlids too
3 TIMES A WEEK 60%? That is absurd, and not good for your fish.
Never change more than 50% at a time (and that’s pushing it) and never 3 times a week. That is just a waste of water, and completely unnecessary.
Also I hope you realize that South American and African fish are ideally kept in COMPLETELY different water parameters and tanks.
Well! Goes to show nobody knows everything, right? Thriving tank, lots of babies, healthy Ph levels (and all levels! Maybe some things just work out even though you may read otherwise. Thanks for the comment. Good luck with your tank!
And exactly what do you consider healthy PH levels? It is impossible to say that when these fish thrive in vastly different water parameters. Maybe you should rely more on what you read and less on experimentation. Once these fish get larger you will have death in your tank, no doubt what so ever. Good luck.
Love your mixed fish i have them also like that central south and african guys that talk bad about your aquarium are mad beacause theirs is as dull as it can be reading are just concepts of what people think but if you don’t try how are you suppose to know!!!!!!!!!! NICE TANK!!!!
this is grosslly overstocked, but my bigger concern is the stocking, u r mixing
SA cichlids with A cichlids? and some of the fish i seen can get over a foot long, i hope u have more than a swimming pool to keep all of them whole and alive
Thanks fo rthe concern! I don’t know which “Idiots Guide” you have been reading but in captivity they grow to match their environment, so there will be no monster fish and they will have plenty of room.
As for mixing the fish, I know MANY people who have done this and have kept thriving fish communities for YEARS! So, I thankfully reject your reality and substitute it for one of my own. Good luck, and be careful what you believe.
Just because it is on the web does not make it true necesarily. Our fish grew from young together and interact regularly, sharing food and everything!
nice work man do not listen to that guy with in expirence fish your doing a very good job although you may want to actually change the gravel rocks to sand or at least a spot where your convicts females can breedif they had to just incase thats onyl if you do not want to actually change waters ever so often i recomend filter gravel good luck with your tank nd once again great job !
Are you retarded?!? a 60% every 3 months? What ass backwards logic are you operating on there? Oh maybe if I destroy my bio-filter once every three months it’ll be able to handle a ridiculous load in between.
im not lying i havent claned the tank for like 3 months the water is sorta green but the fishes do great and every water test i get says that the nitrites, etc. are always fine however i dont recommend doing this maybe im just lucky but i know some people that wont change their water in 1 month and their tank looks gross
